Special Collections represented at the world’s largest gathering of religious scholars

Dr Gareth Lloyd, our curator of Christian religious archives, represented the Library at the joint annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and the Society for Biblical Literature (SBL) in Baltimore, Maryland, between 23 and 26 November.

The AAR and SBL are the world’s largest organizations devoted to the academic study of religion in all its aspects and the Baltimore meeting attracted nearly 11,000 delegates, including academics from the Religions and Theology department of The University of Manchester. The annual meeting showcases the latest in biblical and religious scholarship, fosters collegial contacts, advances research, and focuses on issues of the profession. One of the world’s largest exhibits of books and digital resources for biblical and religious studies is also on display.

During the AAR/SBL meeting, the recent publication by Oxford University Press of The Collected Letters of Charles Wesley, edited by Dr Lloyd and Professor Kenneth Newport of Liverpool Hope University, was celebrated by a reception attended by distinguished guests from a number of North American institutions including Duke University, Southern Methodist University and Boston University School of Theology.
