About Us

Our blog brings you exciting stories from our exceptional special collections, known as some of the greatest in the world.  Explore posts sharing the latest news from all areas of the Library, including collections, research, exhibitions and behind the scenes. We feature ‘hidden gems’ as well as world-renowned treasures. We also welcome guest posts by our visitors, readers and researchers.

The University of Manchester’s collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual materials are extraordinarily rich and diverse. They span 5,000 years and six continents, and include almost every format ever used for written communication. Many derive from the superlative collections purchased by Enriqueta Rylands for the magnificent library she founded as a memorial to her husband John and dedicated to the people of Manchester.

For more information on our Special Collections, and how to access them, visit the Special Collections pages of the Library’s website.

Many items can be viewed online in our rapidly growing Image Collections Manchester Digital Collections and the Library’s Digitised Collections.
